The fee to register with the BSA is $86 / year. These fees go towards insurance costs, safety training, and access to BSA camps and facilities.
The BSA also charges a one-time fee of $25. (This $25 is waived if they have been in Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, or Venturing in the past.)
Our Troop has its own fee of $204/year. This pays for awards, facility rentals, supplies, chartering fees, and some small activities.
Adult registration costs $66. (All fees go to the BSA, not to our troop.)
You will need to pay for your son's uniform, Scout Handbook, camping equipment, etc. Used uniforms are plentiful right now. Check with neighbors, yard sales, and thrift stores.
We have a Class B (T-Shirt) uniform for our Troop as well. If your son attends summer camp (see below for info about Camp Loll) 1 shirt is included in those fees.
If not, the shirts are 1 for $10 or 2 for $15.
We also have a Troop sweatshirt which costs $30.
You will get a custom made Troop 20 patch for your uniform. No need to buy the unit number (20) at the scout shop.
The Troop has a monthly campout (except December). We don’t expect every Scout at every campout, but these regular campouts are a highlight of the boys activities.
They also provide plenty of opportunities to attend 21 Troop campouts for the Camping Merit Badge.
There is an additional cost for the food and supplies for campouts. Some campouts we will ask $10 or $15/Scout who is attending.
Other campouts we will make food assignments for each Scout to bring something. It will just depend on the nature of the campout/activity.
When a parent comes on an overnight campout, we normally DON’T ask the parent to pay the $15. We only ask $15/Scout. These parents normally help transport the Scouts and are paying for gas.
The 5 night Summer Camp is different.
This year (2023) we are attending Camp Loll, right in between the Tetons and Yellowstone National Park. The dates are July 31-August 5, 2023.
This will cost roughly $450 for each Scout. The cost this year is more expensive due to the price of gas. (Camp Loll is a LONG way away.)
Older Scouts (14+ years old, or has attended Summer Camp 2 times as a Boy Scout) will be going on a backpacking trek the same dates. (July 31-August 5, 2023). The exact location is not yet decided, but some possibilites are Wind Rivers, Wyoming or Montana.
We are also planning a 3 night Southern Utah Adventure in June that will include EPIC canyoneering/repelling, and lots of fun!
There are a lot of fundraising opportunities, so the Scouts can earn their own money to pay for Summer Camp and other campouts/activities.
At least one parent from each family is required to register with the BSA and serve on the Scout committee or as an Assistant Scoutmaster. This may also entail being in charge of a major event/program (i.e. Family Recruitment BBQ, Merit Badge class organization, Fundraiser, website, social media, etc)
Adult registration costs $66/parent. (These fees go strait to the BSA. Nothing goes to the troop.)
Before registering with Troop 20, we ask that you first talk with our Membership Chair to make sure you are aware of our policies and agree to them. You can get in touch by emailing membership@highlandtroop20.org.
If your son is new to Scouts BSA, you can register online with Troop 20. We highly recommend choosing to receive Scout Life magazine. It is great!
Our Troop Treasurer (Bryan Summers) has setup a Venmo account for our Troop. https://venmo.com/Highland-Troop-20
Send the $196/year Troop fee (or prorated amount) to that Venmo account.
Send any questions to membership@ut20.org.
